Gynecomastia or Male Breasts

What is Gynecomastia?

This is an enlargement or swelling of breast tissue in males, which can affect one or both breasts.  It can affect pubescent young boys or adult males alike.

What are the causes?

Gynecomastia is most commonly caused by a hormone imbalance between oestrogen and testosterone. Oestrogen controls female characteristics which includes breast growth. Testosterone is attributed to males and controls body hair and muscle mass.

Although these hormones individually produce the normal traits seen in males and females, males do produce a small amount of oestrogen and females a small amount of testosterone.

Gynecomastia is the result when male oestrogen levels are too high or out of balance with testosterone levels.

When does Gynecomastia occur in a male’s life?

  • Directly after birth new-born boys are still under the effects of the oestrogen they received from their mothers whilst in-vitro. More than half of new-born male babies are born with enlarged breasts. The gynecomastia dissipates within 2 – 3 weeks after birth.
  • Hormone levels change during puberty – normally between the ages of 12 – 14 years. Breast overgrowth or enlargement disappears within 6 months to 2 years after the onset of puberty.
  • Breast enlargement often peaks at mid-life and beyond; often between the ages of 50 – 80 years. Approximately one in four men in this age range has gynecomastia.

Various conditions can cause Gynecomastia and/or fatty Breast Tissue

  • Hyperthyroidism – Over-active thyroid – an increase in the ratio of oestrogens vs androgens is believed to be the cause of glandular proliferation in Gynecomastia
  • Hypothyroidism – Under-active thyroid – Hypothyroid men have reduced testosterone secretion
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney failure
  • Lack of proper nutrition
  • Obesity causing Fatty Breast Tissue – due to an increase in fat deposits in the breast*
  • *Please note: Gynecomastia as such is a swelling of the glandular tissue of the breast; it is not fat deposits

Some drugs can also cause this condition

  • Anabolic steroids for enhanced athletic performance
  • Oestrogen – found in many foodstuffs eg. Chicken and also in Polystyrene packaging
  • Finasteride for enlarged prostate
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Proton pump inhibitors for heartburn
  • Diazepam / Valium for anxiety and insomnia
  • Amphetamines, marijuana, heroin, methadone and alcohol

How is Gynecomastia diagnosed?

At The Goddess Factor® we assess the physical symptoms and do a breast examination, we take your medical history in detail as well as a thorough medication/supplements review.

Our Aesthetics Dr may order blood tests to ascertain hormone levels as well as Thermal Imaging* or a Mammogram and/or breast Ultrasound to determine the cause of Gynecomastia and rule out breast cancer**.

*Thermal Imaging is a much kinder option than a Mammogram, especially to squeamish men, to ascertain the health of the breast tissue.

**Breast cancer in men is uncommon, but they can get it. It usually affects only one breast though. The breast is not tender, feels firm to the touch and may contain a lump that feels like it is attached to the breast tissue. Lymph nodes may also be enlarged. The skin on the breast appears dimpled and there may be leakage of liquid from the nipple.

What are the symptoms of Gynecomastia?

Breast pain and tenderness are common symptoms. Often during examination a firm rubbery disc of tissue is felt just beneath the nipple area. This lump is easily movable within the breast tissue.

The shame and bullying Gynecomastia causes young boys and adult men

We live in a cruel and unforgiving world with social media advocating perfection. In our experience, boys and men alike who suffer from enlarged breasts are ashamed to remove their shirts for sports, swimming, communal showers or other events. The amount of bullying that especially teenage boys suffer is immense and can lead to anxiety, stress and depression.
